The Next Constraint on Technology Growth Is Energy

For two decades, the limiting factor in technology has been compute, capital, or talent. That is changing. The binding constraint on the next wave of growth — artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, electrified industry — is energy, and more precisely, the ability to deliver firm, affordable power exactly where and when it is needed.



The evidence is already visible. Britain's largest data centre, a £9 billion development in Bedfordshire, will run on its own gas generation station until 2034 because the grid cannot connect it in time. Around 140 data centres in the UK are now queued for grid connections, and regulators have begun warning that power to these sites may be curtailed when the network is under strain. This is not a generation problem. There is no shortage of electrons being produced. It is a delivery problem — and delivery is where growth now stalls.
